今回のプロセミナーにはASA会長およびASAK会長、ASAデリゲート2名、OAH招聘研究者3名計7名の第一線のアメリカ研究者が、院生・若手研究者とセッションを組んで討論し、あるいは研究上のアドバイスをします。この企画は、アメリカ学会の会員だけでなく、すべてのアメリカ研究大学院生（学部生で興味のある方も歓迎します）・若手研究者の皆さんに開放されております。将来の留学を考えている方や、この場をネットワーキングやキャリア形成に生かしたい方なども含めまして是非ご参加ください。

昼食休憩やその他の時間をもちいて、アメリカ留学についての相談・経験の交流などもはかり、あわせて院生・若手研究者と来日研究者のネットワーキングをはかっていきます。

このシンポジウムでは、アメリカ研究、メディア研究、そして環境研究という様々な分野の研究者が一堂に会し、2005年8月にはじまるカトリナ災害の影響を考察します。カトリナにくわえ、参加者は3.11についても論じ、東北での出来事に続いて「新たなる標準」を受け入れはじめている日本にとって、カトリナ研究がどのように益するかを探るのです。メディア研究、文化研究、地域芸術運動、そして環境社会学の専門家たちが発表するのは、災害というものがメディア（映画・テレビ・インターネット）および、政治・経済・社会的言説で、いかに表象されてきたか、ということです。いくつかのトピックを以下に紹介しましょう。

　　・　人的災害と自然災害の間の差異に関する議論
　　・　危機の継続における市民の権利と活動という問題
　　・　復興過程における、グローバル資本主義のイデオロギー的・経済的関心
　　・　地域的・国家的・地球的なコンテクストにおける災害への情緒的反応
　　・　災害と、ニュースおよびデジタル文化による報道
　　・　集団避難というコンテクストにおける家の表象
　　・　地域と芸術による文化再建

このシンポジウムにおいて、研究者の聴衆（東京在住のアメリカ研究、メディア研究、社会学、災害研究の学者、学生）にくわえて、一般聴衆の参加もお待ちしています。3.11の災害というテーマは、現在はもちろん、これからも長期にわたり東京および東日本の人々に関係すると思えますので、興味ある方はどなたでも歓迎です。

シンポジウムは英語でおこなわれますが、土曜のセッションには一部同時通訳もつきます。講演・パネルとも一般公開で、参加は無料です。

Since the events of 3.11 in Japan, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the subsequent nuclear disaster, there has been a renewed sense of connection between New Orleans and Japan. In the years since New Orleans suffered a catastrophic disaster in the form of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failures and floods in August of 2005, much research has been done that could be of use to those of us living in eastern Japan as we come to terms with what may well be the new normal, to use a common post-Katrina expression.

This symposium will bring together scholars from several disciplines within American Studies, Media Studies, and Environmental Studies to consider the effects of the Katrina disaster since it began in August 2005. In addition to Katrina, participants will also discuss the 3.11 disasters and consider some of the ways in which Katrina research could prove useful as Japan begins to come to terms with its new normal in the wake of the events in Tohoku. Specialists in media studies, cultural studies, community arts activism, and environmental sociology will discuss the disasters as they have been portrayed in the media (film, television, and online) and in political, economic, and social discourses. Some of the topics will include:

the contested distinctions between man-made and natural disaster
questions of citizenship and civic engagement in the continuing crisis
the ideological and financial interests of global capitalism in the recovery process
affective responses to the disaster in local, national, and global contexts
suffering and its portrayals in the news and in digital culture
representations of home in the context of mass displacement
rebuilding culture in the community and the arts

In addition to the academic audience for this symposiumュlocal scholars and students of American studies, media studies, sociology, and disaster studiesュwe look forward to an interested and educated public audience. The topic of the 3.11 disaster is, and will continue to be, relevant to the lives of Tokyoites and residents of eastern Japan for many years to come, and we welcome all who are interested.

The Symposium will be conducted in English. The Saturday session will also offer simultaneous Japanese translation. All events are free and open to the public.

In the period after World War II, the development of American Studies in Britain and other parts of Western Europe was crucially shaped by the efforts of U.S. cultural diplomacy to expand the country’s influence in the face of perceived Soviet threats during the Cold War. In the twenty-first century, as more U.S. political and diplomatic energies are focused on the rise of the People’s Republic of China, it is likely that Australia will be positioned in a similar triangular situation, with the United States keen to preserve and increase ties to its traditional “Western” ally and Australia itself caught between different political, economic and geographical pressures.

This symposium will examine ways in which the twenty-first century has already reoriented the field of American Studies in relation to the PRC and Australia, and how this process is likely to continue and develop. It brings together scholars from around the world working within and across American Studies, Asian Studies and Asian diasporic studies, to look not only at shifting relationships between the Chinese mainland and the West, but also how these shifts resonate in the Asia Pacific region (i.e. Australasia, Southeast Asia and East Asia). In the process, the symposium takes the transnational turn in American Studies outside the national boundaries and ideological frameworks of the US. At the same time, it attempts to promote intercultural dialogue around the ongoing processes of deimperialization and decolonization throughout the Pacific Rim in the post-9/11 era.

We seek papers about the historical, political and economic dynamics of the triangular relationships among the Chinese mainland, Australia and the U.S. In particular, we invite research that examines how representations of Asia and Australasia increasingly are working their way into the U.S. body politic and how these representations, as well as those of the U.S., are being produced, consumed and reworked in the Asia Pacific region. The symposium will consider developments in transnational history, literature, film and media, as well as political and cultural history, and it will aim to make a critical intervention across a broad range of transpacific cultures.

The American Studies Association of Korea (ASAK) is pleased to announce a conference on “The United States in East Asia” to be held in Seoul, South Korea, September 21-22, 2012.

The influence and reception of the United States has been anything but uniform across various regions of the globe. One of the regions in which the United States has been a marked presence is East Asia, a region that is fast rising to prominence in the new century. As of 2010, the three biggest economies of the region—Japan, South Korea, and China—account for 22.3% of the world population, 19.6% of global production, and 45.7% of international reserves. Every single one of these nations has witnessed dynamic and complex interactions with the United States: political and economic rivalries and cooperation, circulation of ideas and cultural practices, and exchanges in educational and social institutions. A truly interdisciplinary approach is called for to capture the sense of the United States as a geopolitical actor and a cultural imaginary in this region. Neither should we lose sight of the simultaneously local and transnational specificities of each East Asian nation, the disparate national contexts that resulted in radically different receptions of all things American.

Recognizing this intricacy, the 2012 ASAK conference aims to further the understanding of the US presence in East Asia by bringing together scholars from different parts of the world. Dialogue between specialists should deepen local, national, and transnational perspectives in the field of American Studies. Furthermore, the East Asian vantage point of the 2012 conference is an invitation to rethink the practice and methods of American Studies in the current world order. We welcome paper proposals in English or Korean from various disciplines on topics such as:

- Economic ties and political interests of the US in East Asia, and vice versa.
- Influence of U.S. economic policies and models, business corporations, and/or financial institutions
- Circulation and exchange of popular culture between the US and East Asia
- Appropriations of U.S. modes of fashion and food
- The impact of the U.S. in educational systems and orientations in East Asia
- Migrations of people, including “brain drainage”
- Representations of the US in the media, literatures, popular culture
- Phenomenon of English fever in East Asia
- Examples reflecting the importance of the U.S. presence in the region.
- American influences in education models and English language education
- Teaching of American literature, culture, and history
- East Asia in the US
- Asian American and/or Diasporic literature
- Comparative studies of the US in other nations or regions such as South Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe

The above list is meant only to suggest a possible range of topics. We encourage proposals on other topics related to the overarching theme of the conference as well as to various disciplinary fields in American Studies and welcome all research methodologies and scholarly approaches. Interdisciplinary and interregional perspectives are particularly welcome. Graduate students also encouraged to submit proposals and participate in the conference.

Proposals may be submitted for individual papers or for sessions. Individual proposals should include a brief abstract of no more than 250 words and a one-page abbreviated CV. Session proposals should include a one-page proposal with title and topic for a session of 3 to 4 papers along with individual abstracts and bios. All proposals should be sent to the Organizing Committee at asakorea[at]gmail.com (replace [at] with @) by March 15, 2012. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes, followed by discussion and Q&A.

Participants will be notified of the acceptance of their proposals by April 30, 2012, and will be responsible for their travel expenses including airfare and medical insurance. A registration fee of $100 for overseas participants (free for students) will cover accommodations for three nights and meals for two days during the conference.
