Call for Papers

11th Annual American Studies Conference, October 10-12, 2008
Family Ties: Issues in Immigration to America

Foreign immigration into this country has amounted not to a re-enforcement of our population, but to a replacement of native by foreign stock. If the foreigners had not come, the native element would long have filled the places the foreigners usurped
                                                 General Francis A. Walker

Our review of economic research finds immigrants not only help fuel the Nation’s economic growth, but also have an overall positive effect on the income of native-born workers
Council of Economic Advisers

                                                 Chairman Edward P. Lazear

Immigration has played an important role in the economic as well as social and cultural development of America. However, migration does not mean that the migrant severs links with the homeland. The traditions of one’s country of birth, which are reflected in rituals, values, and relationships, continue to be part of the migrant’s personality. The migrant has to conform to the structures, regulatory regimes and practices of the host country. Thus, the migrant’s identity is influenced both by the experiences of the homeland and those of the adopted country, with positive and negative effects with regard to assimilation into the host country.

Keeping in view the above parameters, the Area Study Centre for Africa, North & South America, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad is organizing the 11th Annual American Studies Conference during October 10-12, 2008. The Conference would cover four broad areas of American Studies: American politics/history (Homeland Act, seeking/renouncing citizenship, etc.), economic issues (home remittances, effects of deportations, etc.), literature (writing home/about home), and society (bilingual families, youth identities, etc.). The papers would help to understand crucial aspects of America, i.e., Canada, USA, Caribbean and Latin America, domestically and in the international context.

The deadline for abstracts is June 10, 2008. Selected participants will be informed by July 10 and their abstracts included in conference papers. Final papers would be due by August 10, 2008. All submissions would be professionally reviewed and published by the Centre.

Scholars are encouraged to obtain travel funds from their own institutions but partial funding may also be available in selected cases. Conference participants would be expected to attend all the sessions and provide feedback, particularly on its academic content.
