9・11事件は、アメリカ社会が国境の管理と日常の安全性とを結びつけるよう作用した。それは長年にわたるメキシコ移民労働者に対する経済的・文化的な反感を正当化する根拠ともなった。こうしたアメリカ主流社会の動きを象徴する2005年移民規制法案に対し、ヒスパニック集団はアメリカ人としてのアイデンティティと権利の主張を真っ向からぶつけた。アメリカとメキシコが接し、また融合する多元的コミュニティを形成するテキサス州エル・パソ市から、アメリカ移民政策の最新の状況をスタウト氏に提供していただく。それをもとに、多文化主義の原則と内向きのアイデンティティという二つの潮流がぶつかる、今日のアメリカ社会の課題について議論していきたい。スピーカーの使用言語は英語だが、スペイン語での応答も多少は可能。
