1. Hellfire Nation! Understanding American Politics　　
A seminar based on my latest book, Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History. I will first suggest the usual ways of "reading" American politics, then show why understanding American politics requires a knowledge of America's powerful religious and moralistic traditions.
2. Blue State versus Red State: The Fierce Divisions in Contemporary American Politics. Or Why has the USA Become so Conservative?
The United States has rarely been as divided as it is today. Commentators often describe red versus blue states (reflecting the Democratic and Republican states as they are pictured on television during election returns). This seminar looks at the great underlying issues that divide Americans today and explains exactly why the United States has become so conservative.
3. Liquor! Tobacco! Fat! How Public Health Alarms Subvert American Individualism
Americans pride themselves on their individualism. The cowboy on the Western Frontier is a much beloved icon. At the same time, Americans are often very quick to intervene and regulate peoples' private lives -- witness the prohibition against liquor (1920-1933) or the campaign against tobacco (1964-present). This seminar explains a paradox at the center of public health policy
4. Understanding The American Health Care System　　
Almost everyone in the United States agrees that the health care system is in terrible condition. Yet it is almost impossible to fix. Why?
